Apple became a hit sensation with their iPod music player and they followed it up with the legendary iPhone series. Competitors soon found their Smartphones awkward and user unfriendly, and the race was on. Google promoted its Android platform, which a few manufacturers such as HTC and Samsung have embraced. Nokia has released a set of Smartphones and very recently, a development environment. RIM, with their generation 6 Blackberry devices have also started to push for a user friendly Smartphone.

This talk will compare the Smartphones that are available in Australia, including the technologies that drive them. Of particular significance will be developing for the iOS and Android operating systems as these mobile devices are at the forefront of the Smartphone market in Australia. This talk will also compare and contrast the apparent purpose of Smartphones and their potential use in specific target markets. A small section will be on the Windows Phone 7, its benefits and pitfalls for the modern Australian SME enterprise.

At the end of this talk, attendees will have a very detailed understanding of the mobile platforms currently available in Australia and the way to get started developing for each of the iOS, Android, RIM/Blackberry and Nokia devices.

I started programming at the age of 11 by playing with Turbo C on an old 486. Since then I have sampled a few different languages and settled on C#/.Net/Mono where I developed enterprise mobile systems for Sanitarium Health Food Company. After doing that, I jumped on to the web development bandwagon and did freelance work using custom built sites, Joomla and Drupal.

Have started developing with MonoTouch, Appcelerator and plain Obj-C. After a few apps, I am glad to be part of the emerging MonoTouch community.

I also enjoy Lord of the Rings, playing the trumpet and the great outdoors.
