Do you want to work in, or build, a company or project that reflects your values?
Open Source is more than publishing source code under an OSI approved license. There are real world examples of this, and we can thus explore why this "isn't quite what we wanted".
It's not just about community, either. It about (business) processes, the way we do things: involving software development, marketing, sales, but even relates to product research and (ohyes) human resources!
We look behind the "Open Source" buzzword to the fundamental values that people find important, then see how these ideas have already been applied successfully by other businesses from tiny to large (both recently and long ago).
In a nutshell, you can't just grow a business, then plonk a label "we stand for X" on it. That would neither mean anything nor change the way the company works, and the way it works defines how the world will see it. So it's not an afterthought. It's worth thinking about, then keeping it in mind when you act.
